Grammatical Issues ofIidioms Interpretation

Wewill now take a close look at some features ofphrasal expressions. An important point which has to be stressed is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial expressions, as a lot of people think. They can appear in formal style and in slang. They can emerge in poetry or in the language of Dickens and business letters.

What, then, is an idiomatic expression? We can say that an idiomatic expression is a number of phrases which, if found in the same place, mean something unique from the individual words of the idiomatic expression when they are found individually. The way in which the expressions are put together is sometimes weird, illogical or in some cases grammatically incorrect. These are the special properties of some idiomatic expressions. Other idiomatic expression are totally regular and reasonable in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Because of the individual features of certains idiomatic expressions, we have to study the idiom as a whole and we sometimes fail to amend any part of it (except maybe, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English language is very rich in idioms. Actually, it is difficult to speak or write English language without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even realize that an idiom which he implements is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically incorrect causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes understood from the vocabulary.
